Kerala-Style Mutton Soup 🥣✨

A Comforting, Nourishing Bowl for Cold Evenings

There is something deeply comforting about a bowl of hot soup on a cold evening. The steam rising, the aroma of spices filling the kitchen, and that first warm sip — it feels like therapy 🤍

In many Kerala homes, mutton soup is not just food; it is nourishment, recovery, and care served in a bowl.

Today, I’m sharing a simple Kerala-style mutton soup made with bone-rich mutton, vegetables, and warming spices — pressure cooked to extract every bit of goodness.

Why Choose Bone-Heavy Mutton? 🦴✨

For this soup, I always prefer mutton pieces with more bones than meat.

Why?

Because bones release collagen, marrow, and essential minerals when cooked under pressure. This makes the broth richer, more flavorful, and far more nutritious.

Traditionally, bone-based soups are known to:

  • Support immunity 💪

  • Help during cold and cough 🤧

  • Improve joint strength 🦵

  • Aid digestion 🌿

  • Provide natural protein and minerals 🥩

In many Kerala households, this soup is prepared during winters, rainy days, and even for recovery after illness. It is considered almost medicinal.

Ingredients 🥕🌽

  • 500g bone-heavy mutton pieces 🥩

  • 1 medium onion, chopped 🧅

  • 2 green chilies, slit 🌶️

  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste 🧄

  • 1 carrot, chopped 🥕

  • 1 small potato, diced 🥔

  • ¼ cup corn kernels 🌽

  • 1 small stalk celery, chopped 🌱

  • ½ tsp turmeric powder ✨

  • 1 tsp chili powder 🌶️

  • ½ tsp fennel powder 🌿

  • ¼ tsp garam masala

  • 1 tsp freshly crushed pepper 🌶️

  • Salt to taste 🧂

  • Fresh cilantro (or parsley/dill) for garnish 🌿

  • 4–5 cups water

How to Make Kerala Mutton Soup 🔥

Step 1: Prepare the Base

Add cleaned mutton pieces into a pressure cooker.

Add:

  • Chopped onions

  • Ginger-garlic paste

  • Green chilies

  • Carrots, potatoes, corn, and celery

Step 2: Add the Spices

Sprinkle in:

  • Turmeric for warmth ✨

  • Chili powder for mild heat 🌶️

  • Fennel powder for authentic Kerala aroma 🌿

  • A little garam masala for depth

  • Generous pepper powder for sinus-clearing warmth 🌬️

  • Salt to taste 🧂

Step 3: Pressure Cook

Pour enough water to cover everything.

Close the lid and pressure cook for 5–6 whistles on medium heat.

This is where the magic happens. The bones release nutrients, vegetables soften perfectly, and the spices blend into a rich, golden broth.

Step 4: Finish and Serve

Once the pressure releases naturally, open the lid carefully.

You’ll see a beautifully flavored, aromatic soup 😍

Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro. You can also use parsley or dill for a slightly different herbal note.

Serve hot and enjoy!

Why This Soup Is Perfect for Winter ❄️🤍

Winter often brings lowered immunity, cold, congestion, and fatigue. A warm bowl of mutton soup helps by:

  • Keeping the body warm 🔥

  • Supporting immune function 💪

  • Clearing mild congestion 🌬️

  • Providing protein and essential minerals 🥩

  • Offering comfort to both body and mind 🤍

It is light yet filling. Nourishing yet gentle. Spiced yet soothing.

Sometimes, the simplest traditional recipes carry the deepest wisdom 🌿
